Driving around town, we make a point at looking at the different types of ramps that have been installed at homes to accommodate people who use wheelchairs to come and go freely in their homes. All too often, we see ramps that are not building code compliant, having grades that are too steep, or lacking a secure railing system. We at Creative Housing│Creative Renovations find ourselves hoping that the contractor that built the ramp was not involved in any inside the house renovations.

While a ramp is often the most apparent modification to a home for a wheelchair user, there are a number of other adjustments that are important to consider. Products ranging from track/lift systems, and adaptive seating to something as simple as a grab bar by a bed increases safety significantly. The most important first step is finding an experienced “aging in place” contractor. Choosing someone who will visit you in your home, listen to your needs and propose modifications that will serve you now and well into the future.  Working together, you can create a plan to make adjustments that fit your specific needs.

New Technology Brings New Choices

Recent advancements in technology offer new solutions. Fifteen years ago we began to develop “voice activated” home systems for people using wheelchairs. Now with the Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri, there is the possibility to interconnect compatible products. A wheelchair user can give voice commands to control lighting, see who is at the front down and open it, control room temperature, control the oven, answer the phone and dictate an e-mail, to name just a few. Whether you are working to help your parents modify their home, or you personally need increased accessibility, choosing a qualified accessible contractor is key.

You see, the outside ramp, while vital, is just a start to creating an accessible home that meets all of your needs….And, finding a home construction partner that you trust is the first step.
