It is not uncommon for Creative Renovations to get a call from a homeowner who had accessibility renovations completed by another contractor, stating the renovations “don’t work”. While driving around town, I see wheelchairs ramps that are not code compliant and at times, outright dangerous. Many homeowners contemplating accessibility renovations begin with the premise that any contractor will be able to do the job. The wrong contractor, though, may complete an “accessible bathroom” that is unfortunately not accessible/suitable for the person actually living in the home.

The contractor should spend some time with you in your home, observing how you get about and what areas are trouble spots for you. If you are unsteady on your feet or use a wheelchair, the bathroom is usually the most challenging room in the house. If entry is a problem, an outside ramp or lift system can offer solutions based on your home elevation and personal preference.

When selecting a contractor, also be sure to check that they are licensed and insured, obtain building permits in their company name, and have references for previous accessibility work. As you review your contract, check that it has a clearly defined scope of work and product information. Insist on including a floor plan with the contract, if you cannot clearly visualize what is being proposed. The contract should also provide a job schedule and contractor payment schedule tied to specific milestones. Most importantly, select a contractor with whom you feel comfortable.
